David Locke is a television reporter on location in Africa’s Sahara Desert. It’s hot, humid, and everything seems to be dirty. Returning to his hotel after getting lost and bogged in the desert, he discovers that the man in the room next to his has died. After deciding that his own life wasn’t worth living anymore, he switches identities with the dead man, taking the man’s passport (with his own photo swapped in), his luggage, and his appointment schedule. Leaving Africa, he heads off to keep the dead man’s appointments, hoping that his new life will be more interesting than his old one was.

In the not-too-distant future, Capt. J.T. Robbins (Liotta) is sent to prison for killing his superior. The corporately (and corruptly) run prison causes Robbins to rebel against the Warden (Lerner). His rebellion only gets him sent to the most maximum security facility there is – Absolom. The worst hardcore criminals are just dumped onto the island Absolom to live or die as they can. The island is patrolled by heavily armed helicopters and fenced by impenetrable sea defenses. Two different societies have formed over the years; an evil ‘empire’ run by Walter Marek (Wilson) that is conflicting with the other, more pacific, group run by The Father (Henriksen). Resources are kept scarce by the warden as a game to keep the population down by destroying themselves. Who will our hardcore Captain fit in with the best? Can anyone escape from Absolom?

Sands stumbles into the middle of a liquor store robbery that forces him to defend himself, which leads to his arrest by the local police department. While in custody, John finds he cannot escape his past. The Agency he worked for has located him. While John sits handcuffed inside the police station they offer him a deal – find the jet and bring it back into the United States. If he does this they’ll allow him to walk away from this life and start over without having to look back. John knows he has little choice and agrees to the deal.

Balto III: Wings of Change (2004)

Balto is now retired, and his son Kodi (from the same litter of pups seen in Wolf Quest) works for the US Mail. Kodi loves his job and his new friends, – Dusty, Kirby and Ralph. Balto is intrigued by the new bush plane that has arrived in Nome. He wishes to fly, just like the plane. When the plane delivers the mail faster than the dogs, tension builds up and Kodi and his friends are worried that they might lose their jobs. They have a resentment against the pilot – Duke. Meanwhile, Boris falls for a lady goose named Stella. He wants to fly with her, but he’s afraid of heights. He eventually lies to her, claiming that he’s suffering from numerous ailments that prevent him from flying. A race is organised between the dogsled team and the bush plane. Kodi wants his father to lead his team. Balto is not so sure, but after a little convincing from Jenna, he acceps the offer. Not long afterwards, Duke discovers Balto exploring his plane. The two become friends, for Duke knows about how Balto saved the children. The next day, the race is about to begin. Boris boasts to Balto about how he’s lied to Stella, unaware that she’s right behind him. She becomes very angry and manages to get him stuck in one of the mail bags, which is hoisted onto the plane. The race begins. The destination is to the town of White Mountain and back. At first, the plane easily overtakes the dogs. But on the way back, the plane mysteriously disappears. The dog team wins the race, and Kodi is confident that his job is secure. But Balto still doubts it, much to his son’s dismay. When the plane still hasn’t arrived yet, Balto suspects that something has gone wrong. He sets out to rescue Duke and Boris, but Kodi refuses to help. After Balto leaves, Jenna is surprised and angry that Kodi had not gone to help – that he valued his job over a human life. She scolds him, and Kodi realises that it is his duty to help his father. With the help of Stella and Muk and Luk, Balto locates the site of the crash, but not before encountering two angry moose. Boris is quickly found, and Stella and the polar bears head for home. Balto stays behind. He finds Duke (who’s leg is broken) and tries to haul him back to Nome on a sheet of metal. After a disaster involving an ice bridge, Balto and Duke are about to fall into a chasm. But Kodi and his friends arrive just in time to save them both. The dogs help bring Duke back to Nome and Balto is praised as a hero, once again. Stella eventually forgives Boris, and Balto finally accomplishes his dream of flying.

Oberst Redl (1985)

Set during the fading glory of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the film tells of the rise and fall of Alfred Redl (Brandauer), an ambitious young officer who proceeds up the ladder to become head of the Secret Police only to become ensnared in political deception.
This is the story of a life…a very unique insight into the main character’s feelings and experience. His fanatical devotion that leads to a personal tragedy; a “son of the emperor,” as called once by a priest in church, that turns into a “traitor”; an ambitious soldier that becomes an indefatigable spy. Brandauer does a perfect job in the role and I dare claim that, in the matter of the lead role, Redl is much more appealing than Mephisto. He represents a blind service of anyone who absolutely believes in political systems, governing bodies and who places all his hope in military career when war is more likely to break out. Redl is not a particular history but history in general that so often experiences enthusiasm, devotion, trust, success, but also disappointment, disillusion, fear, despair and madness. History personified in human being. I am aware that this aspect was also present in MEPHISTO, but here, the character can be analyzed within history or outside history.
