There’s this fancy upscale restaurant called Le Hollandaise where the brutish owner holds forth every night with his gang of thugs and his trophy wife (Helen Mirren). Now Georgina (Mirren) isn’t exactly pleased with the way her hubby treats here and becomes fascinated with a book-reading patron who she has an affair with right there at the restaurant under her husband’s nose…in the lady’s room, in the storage areas, wherever they can get away for a quickie. Seems that when the husband does find out though, he isn’t too happy about the whole thing the lover meets with an untimely demise. And there’s even sort of a twist ending. Now the basic storyline sounds more or less familiar but the way it’s pulled off is not. The brutish restaurant owner terrorizes staff and customers, and with the staff one unfortunate member is treated to being smeared with excrement. A young boy is also badly hurt, and one customer who is somehow a friend of one of his thugs ends up with a fork stuck in her face. And that isn’t even the worst of it. And don’t even get me started on the cleanliness standards in the kitchen. One of the cooks is constantly shirtless but he’s no Fabio, with a big pot belly hanging over his waistband. This is a very strange movie, and atmospheric, and also a bit hard to watch. Sometimes even borders on pornography, I reckon. It is NC-17, after all. This is not for the faint of heart but has a certain something to it that the viewer may like if they have a sense of adventure.
