13-year-old Noura is a Muslim boy who still goes with his mother to the womens’ Turkish baths in Tunisia.
In an atmosphere of political oppression, the men will not allow him in their adult conversations, and yet his abusive father scolds him for hanging around with the women, who seem to welcome him.
To ingratiate himself with two older boys, Nora takes some girly magazines from his father’s shop to share, and they recruit him to spy on and report back details of the womens’ anatomy at the baths, awakening his sexual feelings.
When he is banned from those baths for trying to “get a peek”, his attention focuses on a 15-year-old orphan servant girl who recently moved into their home. The story takes place during the celebrations over the upcoming circumcision of Noura’s 4-year-old brother (a highly graphic sequence).
The title of the film derives from Noura’s habit of traveling through his neighborhood over rooftops.
